Cubicute is a simple online puzzle game by Christian Zienert. The object of the game is to bring all nine squares "upstairs," or to their largest size. You do this by clicking on the squares. When you click on a square, it changes not only itself, but also any horizontally or vertically adjacent squares. For example, I'll tell you how to beat level one: click once on the center square. You'll have to solve the remaining levels for yourself.
The graphics are in 3-D anaglyph, and 3-D glasses do enhance the game, but are in no way necessary to enjoy it. I played it several times without the glasses, and it plays just fine.
I would have expected a game like this to have been done in Flash, but it ain't so. This game is entirely coded in good old Javascript and HTML.
I managed to beat the first ten levels, but was stumped by level 11.
UPDATE: I have beaten Cubicute! Here is a screen shot of me about to score my 344th point, on Level 48, the last level of the game.
Further notes on Cubicute:
- You are penalized for wrong clicks, so it is best to work out the answer on paper or in your head before clicking, if you can.
- There are 48 levels. But levels 34 to 48 are more complex, as Zienert added another layer to the puzzle, so that instead of each square having three possible sizes, it has four. Just thought I would warn you.
- There are some minor errors in the game. Level 15 wrongly says a "perfect" solution is 4 clicks. But that level cannot be solved in fewer than 5 clicks, so you lose a point unfairly.
- Level 21 wrongly says "perfect" is 8 clicks, but it can be solved in only 4. If you take advantage of this error, you can get four extra points just by clicking any square 4 times before solving this level. (Clicking any square 4 times will cycle it back to its starting state.)
- Level 25 also says "perfect" is 8 clicks, when only 4 are needed, so you can get four extra points here too. So there is no reason to resent the point that was stolen from you in level 15.
- I notice that there is a "high scores" page, but I have found no way to submit my score of 344. Good thing I have a website where I can post the proof.
